Mariachi Plaza is a unique cultural treasure created through the collaboration of the City of Los Angeles and the generous gift of the Kiosco from El Gobierno del Estado de Jalisco, Mexico. The design and development of the Plaza began with this historic donation, gifted to honor and embody the legacy of mariachi music and Mexican folklore.
In 1992, architects Frank Villalobos and William Villalobos of Barrio Planners Incorporated, along with Henry Gonzalez of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), traveled to Jalisco, Mexico, to receive the Kiosco from the Governor. This milestone served as a pivotal moment for Boyle Heights, inspiring the full creation and design of the iconic Mariachi Plaza Pedestrian Mall and Kiosco.
